I’m Too Busy To Start!

It’s no secret that sometimes, it can seem like there are just not enough hours in the day to get everything done. When you are at the beginning of your fitness journey, it can be daunting to find the time to start!

Here’s what a coach would say to someone who is struggling to find the time to take the first step in their fitness journey:

  1. Can we readjust your priorities?

Is there a time in your day that you are currently filling with doom scrolling, television, or sitting? A great start would be to sub that out for a 20 minute walk, a 15 minute workout on your tv, whether it be HIIT, bodyweight, yoga, or even dance! Schedule your workouts like you would any other important appointment. Sometimes just setting aside specific times can help you make it a priority. Even if you have no wiggle room in your schedule it is worth a discussion of what you can cut out to make room for your fitness. After all, you are the best version of yourself in all the other areas of your life when you take care of YOUR health!

  1. Take active breaks

Incorporating small breaks throughout your day can significantly enhance your overall well-being and productivity. Even brief periods of physical activity, such as a quick walk around the office, a set of squats, or some stretching exercises, can have a positive impact on both your body and mind. These short bursts of movement help counteract the effects of prolonged sitting, which many of us experience while working at a desk for extended hours. Sitting for long periods can lead to stiffness, discomfort, and a general feeling of sluggishness. By taking regular breaks to move and stretch, you can alleviate some of these negative effects and refresh your energy levels. This simple habit can not only improve your physical health but also boost your mood and focus, making your workday feel more dynamic and less monotonous.

  1. Incorporate exercise into routine

Finding ways to seamlessly integrate physical activity into your daily routine can make a significant difference in your overall health and well-being. There are numerous opportunities to add movement to your day without requiring major changes to your schedule. For example, choosing to take the stairs instead of using the elevator is a simple yet effective way to incorporate exercise into your routine. Similarly, consider biking or walking for short trips rather than driving!

Make your workouts part of your normal habits. If you go straight home after work and know that once you sit on the couch you won’t get up – create a new pattern! Maybe that means driving straight to the gym from work, or having your walking shoes out and ready as soon as you get home. Creating habits that flow seamlessly is the best way to remain consistent.

  1. Set realistic goals

When you’re juggling a busy schedule and trying to fit a workout into your day, it’s tempting to set ambitious fitness goals in an effort to make the most out of your limited time. However, starting with goals that are too high can sometimes lead to frustration and discouragement, especially if your current routine doesn’t allow for extended workout sessions or intense training.

Instead, it’s more effective to set realistic and manageable goals that align with your available time and energy levels. For example, if you’re new to exercise or dealing with a particularly hectic week, aiming for a 10-15 minute workout a few times a week can be a more achievable starting point. As you build consistency and integrate these shorter sessions into your routine, you’ll likely find that you’re more motivated and better able to gradually increase the duration or intensity of your workouts.

  1. Stay active with hobbies you already enjoy

Choose activities you enjoy that also keep you moving. Gardening, playing with pets, or recreational sports can be both fun and good for you. By incorporating these enjoyable, movement-based activities into your routine, you’re more likely to maintain an active lifestyle without feeling like it’s a chore. This approach helps to blend fitness into your daily life, making it easier to stay committed to your health and well-being while having fun.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating exercise into a busy schedule doesn’t have to be daunting or overwhelming. By setting realistic goals, choosing enjoyable activities, and making small but consistent efforts, you can effectively integrate physical activity into your daily routine without sacrificing other commitments. Remember, even brief periods of movement can contribute to your overall health and well-being, and finding ways to stay active that fit into your lifestyle is key to long-term success. With these strategies, you can make fitness a natural and rewarding part of your life, enhancing both your physical health and your quality of life amidst your busy schedule!
