The Winter Slump Is Real: How to Keep Your Workouts Going When It’s Cold, Dark, and You’re Tired

Once the temperature drops and the sun disappears early, it becomes much easier to stay home than get to the gym. You are not imagining it. The winter slump is real. But with the right strategies, you can stay consistent and even enjoy your training through the colder months.

1. Make your workouts earlier

As the day goes on, energy gets lower. If possible, train earlier in the day. Morning or early afternoon workouts help you avoid the evening slump and give you an early win.

2. Warm up longer

Cold weather makes your joints and muscles feel tighter. Add a few extra minutes of movement prep.
Think:

  • Light cardio
  • Dynamic stretching
  • Controlled breathing
  • Warm up with a similar movement but at a lighter weight!

You will feel more energized and ready to train.

3. Keep your plan simple

Complicated routines feel harder to start. Winter is a great time to simplify. Choose clear goals and repeatable workouts that feel familiar and doable. Keeping your plan simple, also helps you set up for success! Who doesn’t want a win during the week when it’s blistering cold outside?!

4. Pair workouts with something enjoyable

Create small rituals that make winter workouts easier to start:

  • Warm drink after training
  • Favorite playlist
  • A friend or coach waiting for you

Make your environment work for you.

5. Lean on community

When motivation dips, the community pulls you through it.
Walking into a gym where people know you, cheer for you, and expect you makes all the difference. Make plans with someone from the gym so both of you have an accountability buddy, grab coffee after class, or an activity outside of the gym!
