CrossFit Open – It starts on Thursday, February 24th and goes for 3 weeks.
We will be doing the WODs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each of the 3 weeks. On the 3 Sundays of the CrossFit Open we will be open from 2:30pm – 3:30pm to judge the Open WODs. If you are not doing the CrossFit Open, you can still come on Sunday and do Open Box. On Saturdays we will have an alternate WOD available in addition to the Open WOD of the week.
Register here for the CrossFit Open. You do not have to register for the Open to simply do the WODs at FTX. You do need to register for the CrossFit Open if you want to be judged. Please avoid doing the Open WODs on Mondays unless you really couldn’t do them Friday through Sunday, and then please avoid the busy classes. The CrossFit Open is a great time of camaraderie, challenging yourself, being a part of the worldwide CrossFit community and so much more. Join in on this amazing annual event that anyone can do.

Overview of our programming this week

This week we continue with some of the supersets on 3 of the days, but we’re varying it by having you do them after the WODs. We hope you’re enjoying these more non-traditional lifts. Part of continued hypertrophy is constantly challenging the muscles in new and varied ways. Here is our strength/skillwork lineup for the week.

Monday – Bulgarian Split Squats + Core work
Wednesday
– Lunges or Pistols + Piston Presses
Thursday – Bent-over Rows + Hammer Curls
Friday – Back Squats

We start Monday off with a shorter workout with 3 movements – T2B, Burpee pull-ups and Ft. Squats. Tuesday is a class-wide WOD consisting of a variety of movements. Wednesday is a medium-heavy couplet WOD with cleans and pull-ups. Thursday is a medium-heavy workout consisting of deadlifts and thrusters mixed in with rowing and burpees. Friday’s WOD alternates between Push-jerks and lunges with K2E in between. Saturday is a fun and challenging team WOD involving movements that all involve medicine balls.

FTX Yoga – Unfortunately due to a lack of demand, we need to cancel Yoga as of 2/1/22. This week on Tuesday 2/25 we will have an SMR/Yoga/Flexibility class from 7:30pm – 8:30pm led by coach Carol.

Friday – Skierg Speed workout

We start this week off with a 10-minute triplet AMRAP of wall balls, box jumps and jump rope. We follow that up with a slight longer 15-minute triplet AMRAP of bike, lunges and bear crawl. We then go to a FGB format of high-rep lighter movements. Thursday is a longer for time KB WOD with snatches, goblet squats and Russian twists. Friday is a 15-minute partner WOD with DB thrusters, DB C&J and burpees. We finish off the week with a longer WOD called “Milk Punch” consisting of HSPUs, rowing, burpees and farmer carries.

Overview of our programming this week

Hopefully you all have enjoyed and benefitted from our weeks of super-setting various strength and skill movements. For this next week only about ½ the days have strength/skillwork. Our focus this week is on some longer workouts and core. We’re going to ensure all you FTXers have abs of steel!

Tuesday – Snatch
Wednesday – Front Squat
Friday – Clean

We start Monday with a classic Benchmark – Angie. We have 3 options for you on this workout to best ensure the right stimulus for your training. Tuesday’s WOD will ensure your glutes are not neglected this week. Enjoy those lunges! Wednesday is another classic Benchmark – Elizabeth. It’s a shorter WOD which will give us plenty of time to do those front squats, which in combination with Tuesday’s WOD will ensure we get the quads and glutes into hypertrophy beast mode. On Thursday, one part will hit the core hard, and the other part involves a lot of the Assault Bike. Do we need to say more? For Friday think “Rowing Fran”. Saturday is a longer 30-minute full-body workout.

Welcome to the New Year! We continue the tradition of starting the year with Fran. Tuesday is a leg killer WOD. Wednesday is “Ghost”. Thursday is a repeat triplet with cleans, squats and jerks. Friday is Wall Ball fun day. Saturday involves the “Lift up Luke” WOD.

Overview of our programming this week

We have another slightly shortened workout week with New Year’s. Let’s start by talking about the end of the week, which consist of our traditional year-end WODs: The Seven, Brehm and the CrossFit Open 12.1 WOD. The latter is for New Year’s Day at home.

Our Strength/Skill for Monday through Wednesday is Shoulders/Push Press, DB Lunges and Rows + Curls respectively.

Monday and Wednesday’s WODs are shorter triplets with lighter weights. These are both designed for people to go all out as far as speed goes given their aerobic capacity. Tuesday is a descending ladder of hang snatches and burpees with an EMOM interruption of squats.

FTX Holiday Teen Classes
We start tomorrow! Do you have a teen who wants to attend CrossFit classes? We have set the dates and times over the next two weeks for the Teen Essentials program. This special program will be designed to prepare our teens, ages 13-15, for adult CrossFit classes at FTX. Each class will last one hour in length. Kids’ class punches will apply to the classes. Overview of our programming this week
Our strength and skill-work will focus on legs and Oly lifts. Never miss a leg day!
Monday = Bench Press / Tuesday = Sumo Deadlift / Wednesday = Cleans / Thursday = Tempo Back Squats
We start of the week with an inverted Tabata WOD to build the legs and shoulders. On Tuesday we’ll do interval training that will get the glutes and lats. Wednesday will test your engine on the Assault bike and full-body strength and stability with TGUs. Thursday is full-body with G2O punctuated with hitting that core. Friday will get that heart pumping with a nice triplet of Burpees, KBS and jumping. Saturday will just shred everything with 4 rounds of 5 movements.

FTX 12 Days of Christmas Toy Drive
We begin our holiday celebrations on the 1st with one of our 12 Days of Christmas WODs and end it on the 11th (12th is a Sunday) with our other 12 Days of Christmas WOD. This year we are again partnering with the Evangelical Child & Family Agency here in Wheaton to deliver toys to kids in the area. We will have kids’ Christmas wishes on our Christmas tree. We encourage you to grab one and bring some much-needed Christmas cheer to a child.

Christmas Party
We will also have our Christmas Party on that Saturday the 11th at 6pm
It’ll be catered by Portillo’s. We will do our annual White Elephant games for the adults and the kids (12 and under).

So, if you want to participate in this over the Christmas break, please get in touch with Coach Carol. Teens will review the 9 foundational movements and more, including gymnastics movements and Olympic lifts, in preparation to joining the adult CrossFit classes. These classes will be held outside of our regular kids’ classes and will be geared specifically to this age group. Regular kids’ class punches will be applied to the program, which means this is a great deal relative to our regular Essentials Program! Please let us know if you are interested in the program by December 1st so we can finalize times and dates. We need to hear from you if you are interested to be able to make this happen.

Wednesday is … if you read above, then you already know… FTX 12 Days of Christmas! Thursday will be a fun class-wide WOD. Friday will be a calorie burner involving the machine of your choice, and Saturday is the 20:00 AMRAP Hero WOD “TK”.

As of 1/1/2022 we will increase our rates for all existing recurring members. For new members or purchases of session packs (kids or adults), the new prices are effective immediately. Our new monthly membership rate will be $175. All existing members will keep their current discount %s for which they qualify. See our full list of rates here.
We did not want to raise our rates, but the economic factors of increased equipment/supply costs, taxes and labor costs have forced us to make a modest increase. All our existing members’ pre-paid final month will be treated as if they’d paid $175 vs. any other amount as a way of giving some recognition for your loyalty.

This week we are hitting strength only on Monday and Tuesday per se with some Olympic Lifts, but Wednesday’s WOD is very much a leg strength workout.
Monday = Snatch OLY work / Tuesday = Clean & Jerk
The workouts this week range from shorter to longer workouts. We start the week with a classic CrossFit Open WOD from 2013. Our Tuesday and Wednesday WODs are a chipper and a EMOM that will get your whole body. On Thursday we will do our annual Turkey Fight Gone Real Bad. Friday is the ever popular “300” WOD. And we finish of the week on Saturday with various variants for all levels of the classic benchmark “Nasty Girls”.

Overview of our programming this week
We hope everyone enjoyed last week’s WODs with their friends and family. It was great to see so many new faces at FTX. This week’s strength program is pretty varied as per CrossFit’s principle of “constantly varied”, but they complement well what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. The workouts are a bit on the longer side this week and also involve more movements than usual. We will definitely be hitting all the muscles in the body in various way via chippers, AMRAPs, interval training and more.

Monday = Squat Cleans & Front Squats / Tuesday = Bent Over Rows / Thursday = Snatch / Friday = Bench Press

Overview of our programming this week

This week we are doing Friends & Family week on MWF. Our WODs are geared to be very beginner friendly on those days, but as everyone that has done CrossFit knows, they will still be challenging even for those with lots of experience. The focus of the WODs on MWF are body-weight movements. On Tuesday we have a straightforward couplet celebrating Coach Carol’s birthday. On Thursday we are doing our annual FTX Veteran’s Day WOD. Next Saturday will be a heavier team/partner WOD. Our strength programming this week is as follows:

Monday = Back Squat / Tuesday = Wt. Pull-ups / Wednesday = Bench Press / Friday = Shoulder Press

Overview of our programming this week

Some of the strength this week will be done before the workout, but others after the workout. This gives a very different stimulus on the lifts and adheres to the CrossFit principle of “constantly varied” to ensure the body doesn’t get a chance to adapt to a particular format. This prevents plateauing.

Overview of our programming this week

Our current strength cycle mixes powerlifting with Olympic lifting. On the power lifting side, we are constantly varying the sets and reps to give you exposure to a variety of stimulus. We’re not doing a progression right now as when we do a 5-3-1 cycle, but instead hit you from different angles and in different ways to continue to spur muscle hypertrophy and avoiding plateaus. On the Olympic lifting side, we are working with the full movements on some days, and components thereof on other days.

Monday = Back Squat / Tuesday = Snatch / Wednesday = Ft. Squat / Thursday = Split Jerk / Friday = Deadlift

We start the week with shorter WODs. Combined with the heaver lifting on those days, you’ll get a good balance those hours between Metcon and Strength building. The workouts are longer in the second half of the week. Monday and Thursday are lower skill workouts. Tuesday and Friday involve higher skill movements, and Wednesday and Saturday involve more gymnastics/bodyweight movements.

We’ve finished 3 cycles of the 5-3-1 strength program and have seen lots of PRs. For the next few weeks we will be mixing in more of the Olympic lifts and their components while still doing the powerlifts.

This week you will see quite the variety in formats, i.e. AMRAP, FGB, for time, death-by and ladder. There will be challenges to test your sprint speed to testing longer endurance. We hope you enjoy this week’s programming.

On our lifting days the WODs are shorter to allow ample time for the max effort sets. But these shorter WODs will keep you moving at a fast pace for some good lung burns. On Friday and Saturday we’ll have a bit longer WODs.

This week we will be doing the 3-3-3+ rep scheme of our third cycle through the 5-3-1 strength program. Here are the lifting days this week.:
Tuesday = Deadlift / Wednesday = Bench Press / Thursday = Shoulder Press / Friday = Back Squat
On Monday, we encourage you all to run either a 5K or 10K. We don’t program a pure running WOD for coming into FTX, but running is as functional as it gets and we should all be able to run these distances. Log your run times in Wodify. We’ll be giving a variety pack case of FitAid to one person randomly chosen from those who logged either a 5K or 10K time. Medium length WODs are on the menu for this week, except next Saturday will be a longer one. If you haven’t learned how to climb the rope yet and can do at least 1 strict pull-up, consider scheduling a 30 minute PT session with our trainers. We guarantee you’ll get it after that.

This week we start our third cycle of the 5-3-1 strength program. (For those desiring to know more about the why and how behind this strength program, a simple internet search will provide you with a wealth of material.) This week:
Monday = Bench / Tuesday = Deadlift / Wednesday = Core / Thursday = Shoulder Press / Friday = Back Squat
The Metcons this week are all, except for one, for time. This means the amount of work to be completed is fixed, and how long it takes is dependent on you. Other than that, you will see a variety of round and rep schemes. The exercises in the Metcons are quite varied this week. The only movement that is repeated are everyone’s favorite – burpees, but in various iterations.

Overview of our programming this week

It’s back to school time. This means schedule changes for many families, and the corresponding annual transition from summer mode to school mode. FTX has an extensive class schedule from 5:30am – 8:30pm weekdays (7:30pm on Fridays) so that you always have plenty of options for getting in your workout. And, we say “good-bye” to our college students. See you during your breaks. We pray for all to have a great school year, to learn a lot, foster great relationships, and grow as individuals.

Our strength program will be doing the 5-3-1+ rep scheme this week. If you haven’t been lifting regularly with us, then we recommend warming up and doing 3-4 sets of 5 reps each going a little heavier each set until you get to a challenging set of 5. During our 4 strength days you will see shorter workouts with medium weight and fewer movements. On the other 2 days, one will be a longer workout by throwing a combo of shorter WODs at you while the other one will be a Hero WOD. You’ll get a good mix of exercises.

Overview of our programming this week

Your core will get worked this week. Here come the six packs! And combined with some longer WODs, and of course strength training, serious energy will be burned.
This week we are doing 3-3-3+ in our on-going 5-3-1 strength program. Take a look at what you did 4 weeks ago and adjust accordingly. If last time your 3+ set was:

  • 1-2 reps -> then stay at the same weight again.
  • 3-4 reps -> increase weight by a few pounds.
  • 5-7 reps -> increase weight by a bit more.
  • 8+ reps-> your 1RM is way higher than you estimated last time, talk to a trainer to figure out what you should be lifting on all your sets.

Overview of our programming this week

We are back on this week with our 5-3-1 strength program. This week we are back to 5-5-5+ on Tuesday through Friday hitting bench press, deadlift, shoulder press and back squat respectively. We start of the week with a double-header of classic benchmark WODs – Helen and Jackie. This week’s WODs are lighter and focus quite a bit on bodyweight movements that require core strength, range of motion and balance. We finish the week with our O’ Course. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been working to freshen and clean up all of our landscaping, and this included the obstacle area. We think you’ll enjoy the result next Saturday when we run our Obstacle Course.

We’re on an off week for the 5-3-1 strength program. Next week we start our second cycle. This week there is a heavy emphasis on pull-ups, but they are spread out relatively evenly throughout the week. This week’s WODs are a good balance between some power/Oly lifts and gymnastics movements.

Overview of our programming this week

We’ll be doing week 3 of a new 5-3-1 strength cycle this week. The 5-3-1 strength program is one we have effectively used on numerous occasions in the past. Our workouts this week are mostly combinations of running/rowing/biking with another 1-2 movements which vary quite a bit between WODs. The other movements range from jump rope work to deadlifts and squats.

Overview of our programming this week

We are starting a new 5-3-1 strength cycle this week. The 5-3-1 strength program is one we have effectively used on numerous occasions in the past. The workouts this week tend to be in the 15-25 minute range, but vary widely in format – for time, AMRAP, EMOM and Chipper. The weights used for the WODs are medium-heavier. Always scale accordingly to ensure good form and range of motion.

Next week we are starting a new strength cycle. We are going back to doing the 5-3-1 strength program we have effectively done on numerous occasions in the past. For this week we have planned longer workouts and some Olympic lifting. Get your endurance game on!

With summer comes the hotter weather. Enjoy! This means we will also run more and do some more things in the parking lot. Given all this, we do want to remind everyone that we strive to be a very family friendly gym. As such, we ask everyone to keep shirts on and wear clothing that covers the full torso, including the midriff. Please use good judgment on overly tight clothing. We’re not trying to be sticklers here, but at the same time want to protect our family friendly and inclusive atmosphere. And besides, we have A/C!

Overview of our programming this week

This week we are testing our maxes on all the lifts. Let’s see how everyone has progressed over the last strength cycle. Remember that form and range of motion trump speed and weight. Don’t go for a max lift if you haven’t been lifting regularly for the past 6 weeks.
This week the WODs offer a wide variety of movements and formats, but none of them involve really heavy movements since we are hitting it hard and heavy on the lifts.

Overview of our programming this week

We have ended our current strength cycle and will be starting another one next week. As such, we will be focusing on some Olympic lifting and gymnastics this week during our strength and skill-work time. The workouts this week are of varying lengths and formats but do focus quite a bit on working your back and leg muscles. You’ll see a lot of pulling and squatting movements.

This next Saturday we are hosting our 6th Annual Fire Team Challenge & Fundraiser. We will not have classes at FTX, but will have an 8am and 9am class at Northside Park. Meet at the playground.

Overview of our programming this week

Our workouts this week feature several chippers. Chippers are workouts for time where you work your way through multiple exercises and their corresponding reps. Chippers allow for a lot of variety. They are also psychologically satisfying as you get to chip away at the exercises and check them off. This makes this type of workout seem to go by faster in some respects. We finish off this week with our O’Course, which is actually a chipper as this one is programmed. Our O’Course is something unique as very few gyms anywhere in the world offer an obstacle course.
