High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a manmade sweetener that’s found in a wide range of processed foods, from ketchup and cereals to crackers and salad dressings. It also sweetens just about all of the (regular) soda Americans drink. (The artificial sweeteners in most diet soda aren’t very healthy either, but more on that another day.)
This is one ingredient that you want to seriously avoid as much as possible. HFCS wrecks havoc in your system by spiking the sugar levels in your body to amounts that your body is not meant to handle. HFCS was introduced into our food supply about 30 years ago, and since then we have seen obesity and a variety of other conditions like Type II Diabetes rise. Furthermore, most HFCS comes from corn that is genetically modified, which is an additional health concern. HFCS is a highly addictive substance. The jury is still out on how bad this stuff is, but since it is found in so much of our processed food nothing good will come of it. Take a step in the right direction for 2013 and eliminate this harmful ingredient from your daily diet.
